October 28, 2007- Citabria Ferry/Break-in

The Citabria has been at Lee Airport for a week and a half getting the #3 Cylinder worked on.  At the annual this summer, the A&P found low compression on #3.  The repairs -- new valve guide, piston, rings, etc.-- were done and I was going to ferry it from Lee to Essex.  To break the rings in properly, I had to "run it hard" so I decided to fly around for awhile before landing at Essex.  The visibility today was awesome but it was kind of windy.  As I crossed the bay, I saw those sailboats below really healing over.  That's the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in the background.

Looking west to the mouth of the Severn River.  Annapolis and the U.S. Naval Academy is on the left.

Approaching Kentmorr Airpark on the Eastern Shore.  Kentmorr was one of the first airport residential communities in the country.

Overhead Kentmorr.

Looking north.  That's Wye River on the right.  Not sure what the name of the river is on the left.

A better look at the Wye River.  Wye Island, one of my favorite places to fly over,  is on the right, center.

Some friends of ours used to own the house in the center of this image, on this promentory on the Wye River.  We spent a couple of afternoons here, boating and crabbing.

Estate of the day.

Talisman Farm Airfield.  Unfortunately, this private field changed ownership before I knew of its existence and could land here.  The new owner closed it except for some Department of Justice light sport planes and powered parachutes.  I believe the estate if for sale.  I'm tempted to buy it.  All I need is 19 million dollars!     History

Yeah, I could live here.

A flotilla of brightly colored kayaks maneuvering around Wye Island.

Typical eastern shore scene.

This is another very nice private grass airstrip, with intersecting runways.

This private grass strip is on the east side of the Chester River, across from Chestertown.

Talk about waterfront!

Back in 2002, I was flying the Baby Ace during peak foliage and came across this absolutely stunning area in the middle of the image.  The trees were all flaming red.  It was simply awesome at 500 feet in an open cockpit airplane.  I've never forgotten it, and have never seen it that good since.  The foliage just has not been that impressive the last 3 or 4 years.

Imagine all those trees bright red.

Maybe some day they'll be glorious again.

Looking west across the bay is Aberdeen proving ground.  Their restricted airspace is always active and extends across the bay to the shoreline.

Another private grass strip.  Amazingly, I've never seen this one before, even though it is on the chart.  I think a guy flies his Searey out of here.

Heading back towards Essex, I captured this neat shot of the bay, looking south.  You can see the Bay Bridge in the distance.

Baltimore.

Approaching Essex Skypark.  This would be my last landing at Essex Skypark in the Citabria.
