Day 6 Part 2 - Blackfoot, ID to Green River Head to Green River, Wyoming

I left McCarley Field Airport headed due east for the head of the Green River.  Soon I was flying through the Blackfoot Mountains with Palisades Reservoir ahead to the left.

Overhead Alpine Airport at the south end of the Palisades Reservoir.  I was in Wyoming now.  The Grand Tetons were to the north but too far away to get a good look at.   I flew over Alpine Airport (46U).  It looks like an airport community to me.  (Back home, I verified it is an airport community.  They have a two-page ad in this month's issue of Kitplanes Magazine))

Now I'm flying through the Wyoming Range.

A very nice looking golf course in some beautiful but remote country.

Exiting the Wyoming Range into a big valley with the Green River in the middle.

Looking north.

I'm following the Green River north.  It curves around those tree-covered hills to the right to its head:  the Green River lakes.

Are those snow-covered mountains in the distance the Grand Tetons?   The first Green River Lake is just becoming visible.

Over the first Green River Lake with the second visible in the distance.  What a view!

You look at a map while planning the trip; nothing on it indicates you will see something like this.

OK, here we go!  The journey south down the Green River begins.

John Wesley Powell didn't start his journey down the Green River this far north.  He started in the town of Green River.  But I wanted to start from the head.  I'm glad I did.

There may be no canyons on this stretch, but it was beautiful just the same.

Wyoming is a beautiful state, no question.

Looking east at a little civilization.

Where there is water:  green.  No water:  brown.

A little weather to the east.

A private airstrip along the river.

The river turned muddy brown at some point.

Cruising over Fontenelle Reservoir.

Where there is a reservoir, there's a dam.

Soon, the Green River was back to normal.

Premium waterview property!

Crop art.

Approaching the town of Green River.

Interstate 80 stretches out to the west.

I80 goes right through Green River.

Green River has a big railroad presence as well.

Back in 2007, returning home from the west coast in the Citabria, I followed I-80 through Green River.  I saw on the chart they had this turf airfield called the Greater Green River Intergalactic Spaceport.  I didn't have time then to check it out, but now ...

I made a low pass up and down the field, which was mostly dirt.  There were no facilities of any kind.  But I guess if the aliens ever come, Green River is ready.
