AirVenture 2012 - General

Bruce and Bill at the big show!

Walking into the show from the main entrance for the first time Monday morning.

Check out the banner on the tower:  World's Busiest Control Tower.

The Homebuilder's Hangar had a neat banner on each side showing key airplanes in the history of homebuilding.  Note the RV-1 in 1972.

And there is my plane -- the RV-7 -- in 2001.

Inside the Homebuilder's Hangar, Bruce and I listened an interesting talk by the builder of this Delta Dyke which has been flying for 40 years.

I attended the "chalk talk" on gas welding Monday.  On Tuesday and Wednesday I practiced gas welding under the supervision of the EAA instructors.  I picked up some good tips from the instructors.  I did fairly well; maybe I'm finally getting the hang of it.

It seems like the EAA has been critized lately for not doing enough for homebuilders.  But AirVenture has a wealth of resources for the builder who wants to learn any of the skills:  gas welding, TIG welding, wood, composite, sheet metal, riveting, fabric covering, electrical, etc.   One of the gas welder instructors said you could get six hours of supervised practice a day at AirVenture if you were so inclined.   The homebuilder stuff is there for whoever wants it.

In another workshop tent, they were covering the ailerons and flaps of a B-17!  Apparently the B-17 Aluminum Overcast had been damaged by hail.  So they were repairing its components in front of everybody at AirVenture.

Man, that's a big aileron.

A Poberzny Super Ace, sans fabric.

Could General Aviation be flying electric-powered airplanes in twenty years?

Who drinks this stuff?

I was drooling over these accordian hangar doors at a booth in one of the four big Vendor Buildings.   My hangar doors are terrible.  I have to go into my neighbors hangar just to open and close my doors, plus they screech so loudly that I should probably wear ear protection.

The new "Luxury Boxes" on the flight line so the rich and famous can sip designer bottled water away from the masses while watching the airshow.

An airplane for the true outdoorsman.
