November 18, 2006 - Flight to South Jersey Airport

Weather on this Saturday was pretty good for mid-November.  In the low 50s, broken around 5,000.  Bruce and I went to the Essex Skypark Pilots Association Meeting  -- which was very positive, by the way -- and then jumped in the Citabria for a flight up to South Jersey Airport (KVAY).   Here we're heading northeast, just about to cross the Delaware River.
On the New Jersey side, looking south.  As you can see, the brightly colored leaves are no more.
Looking north.  That's Wilmington, Delaware top center.
Philadelphia skyline.  We could see it at the time but my digital camera couldn't capture i
On right downwind for South Jersey Airport (KVAY).  For a relatively small airport, it was very busy.  We were one of four in the pattern.
The FBO and restaurant are in that building in the background to my right.
After lunch, we checked out the Air Victory Museum next door.  They had a bunch of jets inside:  F-14 Tomcat, F-4 Phantom, Blue Angel A-4 Skyhawk, A-7 Corsair, F-86L, and F-104 Starfighter.  They had a bunch of engines:  a big radial R2800 (powered F6F Hellcat), Junkers Jumo 004 (powered ME-262), an F-14 Tomcat engine.  Also a bezillion plastic model airplanes.  Nice museum.
The sky had clouded up during our time on the ground.  Heading southwest, the sun was shining through ahead.
The late afternoon sun lit the ground up in a warm glow.
Once we flew out from under the overcast, we climbed up to 5,000 above the layer.
Yanking and banking over the clouds!
Then back under and continuing home.  That's the Chester River up ahead.  The "Golda" intersection is that bend in the river.  Golda is our ADIZ check-in point.
Chestertown is on the west side of the Chester River.

ADIZ Checkin with Potomac ATC went smoothly.  We noticed a Cessna 172 off to our left right before we hit the bay.   They were obviously headed for Martin State airport.  We were at exact same altitude and airspeed.  We both kept heading in, then finally he dove a little and I climbed and we crossed.  It was fun.

Chalk up another great aviation day.
