January 31, 2007 - Forward Canopy

The forward canopy is pretty much done.  Trimming is complete and the edges are nice and smooth.  It's ready for drilling.
I marked the hole locations for the side weldments, then drilled them to #40.
In preparation for drilling the canopy frame channels, I made a template of the spice plate.  Why not just use the spice plate?  Well, it rests on the inside and has a flange which makes it unusable as a template.
OK.  During canopy frame building, the instructions called for drilling the canopy frame channels to the side weldments.  I did that.  I went ahead and riveted the channels to the side weldments.

Now the instructions say to put the forward canopy on the canopy frame and push the canopy frame channels against the canopy, then clamp the channels to the roll bar.  Then remove the canopy and match-drill the channel using the spice template.  Unfortunately, my channels were not even close to making contact with the canopy along their entire length.  Because the channels were riveted to the side weldments I couldn't move them much.

Bottom line, I'm going to have to order new channels.

This picture shows the old channels still riveted to the side weldments.
